If you're dying to spruce up your kitchen but don't know where to begin, you can start by creating a fun and cool looking backsplash to give the wall between your cabinets some texture and visual interest. There are many ways of adding a bit of pizzazz to this important part of your kitchen but decorative tiles are one of the most commonly used materials for this project. However, there are several things you need to consider before embarking on a tile-buying spree. Since kitchen backsplashes are subjected to a great deal of use and abuse you want to choose a tile that cleans easily and will not stain — choosing the wrong kind of tile might make it harder to keep the backsplash clean all times. You also need to keep in mind the style of your kitchen so the tiles you select will complement the rest of the room (see ABL Tile & Bathroom for more on this). According to, some people often choose tile murals for their backsplashes because they're different and quickly transform the overall look of a kitchen. But the list doesn't stop here. There are many other quick and clever ways of updating your kitchen backsplash. So if you need help deciding what's your best option, Houzz is a one-stop online source where you can find tips and wonderful inspiration for your kitchen makeover and any other decorating project. Trust me, it can make things go a lot smother.

Exposed to breathtaking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, this jewel of a home is the result of the perfect marriage between clever architecture and contemporary art. The villa is located high in the mountains of the Italian island of Capri, which gives it that authentic bright sunlit aura. The whitewashed walls, together with the stone floors, set the perfect scene to enhance the select colorful pieces in the decor. It's evident blue is the color of choice as it's the one hue that's present in every room of the house—perhaps inspired by the alluring deep blue sea that surrounds it. But my favorite feature of all is the impressive stone wall in the shower area that creates a dramatic contrast with the slick design of the bathroom. This is paradise.

This spectacular and well-preserved Barcelona flat is anyone's dream come true. With captivating purity, lightness and inviting serenity, the immaculate interiors embrace the stunning detailing on the wall and ceilings. The owners did a phenomenal job of maintaining the essence and personality of the place by carefully restoring the original mosaic floors, windows and gorgeous arched doors that connect the living spaces. The strong architectural elements, high ceilings, simplicity and smart mix of elements from the past and present is what defines the identity of this breathtaking Catalonian home. All that glorious white... double sigh!

A Wall is Born

In my line of work, I'm constantly exposed to new and interesting materials and finishes for the home. There are so many out there it's hard to keep track. One that I've been using in some of my projects with excellent results, and have fallen madly in love with, is this modern embossed three-dimensional wall covering by Inhabit. They're lightweight wall tiles that work together through an automatic pattern repeat to create large-scale dimensional walls of any size and shape. I find it to be a great solution to dress up any dull wall in a home. They automatically, and without much effort, add some character and spark to the room. For the longest time, I've been dying to bring this project home and use it on a brick wall which I've wanted to revamp for a while. It was hard to choose from all the patterns they offer, but since I wanted to somehow maintain the feeling of brick, I chose the Seesaw pattern. So I rolled up my sleeves, and with the help of my best friend Luis, we embarked on the perfect weekend project. The result: a slicker and modern brick wall. What do you think? To me, it's the best example of decorating to your heart's content. You can see how it turned out after the jump.
