Optical Illusion

If Halloween wasn't the inspiration behind these fabulous installations by UK born artist James Hopkins, they sure are timely now. The series of compositions named Vanitas (Latin for Vanities), consist of household objects strategically arranged on bookcases to form the image of skulls. He really did an amazing job hunting down the right items and slightly altering others to achieve his vision. Talk about being imaginative and seeing things beyond their everyday use. These pieces are insanely cool!

Hooking Up

We've started feeling the crisp Autumn air in the city, a nice and welcomed change from the humidity that Summer often brings. Even though we're going to have unseasonably warm weather this weekend in New York, it's time to start taking the coats and jackets out of hibernation — which brings me to the reason for this post. It's not easy finding coat rack and hook interpretations that are fun and different, especially when they have to occupy precious real estate on your wall. That's why I'm digging these catchy wooden hooks inspired by the high voltage insulators in electrical conductors. The Thomas Alva Edison Knobs were designed by llot llov, one of Germany's most talked-about design studios. Besides providing a nifty place to hang your winter gear, the knobs become a cool-looking sculpture you can showcase on your wall year round.

Neatly Done

Being the neat freak that I am, I always get excited to find new furniture that's been designed to keep things tidy. The Oslo-based Jenk Design Office had people like me in mind when creating the Slope Desk, a beautifully crafted piece with incorporated storage compartments to keep everything neatly put away when not in use. Besides preventing clutter from accumulating, the subtle angle of the desk top also provides a more ergonomic working surface. This is definitely my kind of furniture.

Ingenuity At Its Best

I came across this ultra-fun bookshelf at the Sao Paulo home of designer Humberto Campana, and thought it would be the perfect treat for this Sunday. Humberto and his brother Fernando designed it using as inspiration their award-winning Favela chair, 1991. How crazy is that back panel made from different pieces of scrap wood? Love, love, love! If you want to take a complete tour of Humberto's fab pad go here.

Simple Ingenuity

I never get tired of seeing the creative approaches designers come up with when rethinking furniture, especially when the idea is simple, yet clever and imaginative. The Serpent modular shelving unit, by Polish designer Bashko Trybek, is all that and more. Besides being über minimalist and beautiful, it allows you to combine and arrange the shelves to fit various interiors and spaces. His simplistic concept goes as far as using the four basic colors in printing: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Pretty cool!

A Precious Find

Mirror, mirror on the wall, how many goodies can you store? Surprisingly, this practical mirror system by French designers Céline Merhand and Anaïs Morel of Les M Design Studio, can conceal quite a bit. The jewelry box-inspired Precious (loving the name) consists of a pull-out bar with hooks to neatly hang necklaces and earrings, and a set of three built-in drawers to put away smaller accessories or even makeup. You can even customize the look of the mirror by playing with the shapes and colors of the boxes. Nicely done!

Coming Trough

There's nothing turbulent about this new interpretation of the iconic airplane trolley. The mini bar on wheels has been repurposed by Skypak into a multi-purpose storage piece for your home. Whether you use it as a wine rack, a luxurious shoe cabinet or a coffee bar, these chic and functional trolleys –actually made from original airplane equipment–are a fun accessory to have. You can go crazy choosing from a variety of cheeky designs, some even with gold interior, Bisazza mosaic tiles and 82,000 Swarovski crystals. Apparently the sky is the limit, pun intended!

Modular Sensation

Sometimes it's quite hard to find the perfect piece of furniture that will fit our needs, either in size or color, without sacrificing quality. In order to address this dilemma, Håkan Johansson founded the Swedish company Zweed. One of its most innovative lines is Citti, a flexible and modular system that offers their clients a storage unit tailored to their requirements. What's great about this concept is that you have the option of choosing the size, depth, configuration, finishes and colors that best suit your home. You can also design your unit with or without doors and drawers for the compartments. I just love the versatility of this product, especially when space is an issue. It's the perfect storage piece for any room in your home that can be modified or expanded if needed.
