NO WIRE HANGERS EVER

I don't know about you, but for me everything needs to have its own place—a basic rule that helps me keep my pad tidy. One of my biggest pet peeves, and one I often get teased about by my friends, is having an overly organized closet, especially since I live with limited square footage. The best way of keeping your wardrobe neat is to plan your closet according to your lifestyle. There are many options how to achieve this, but custom closets are ideal to get the most out of your space. They can be customized to fit your wardrobe and personal needs. Here are some tips that I live by that will make your closet shine:

A TINY PARISIAN JEWEL

One really needs to get creative when space becomes a luxury. I'm amazed how this micro apartment in Paris was designed to fit everything needed to live comfortably. French design firm betillon / dorval-bory used a minimalist approach in its design where light becomes an important element to compartmentalize the space. Using white as its primary color was key in making the apartment look more spacious than it actually is. This proves that square footage doesn't actually matter that much, and it's how you take advantage of it that counts.

FOR THE LOVE OF BIKES

Apart from being a fun source of transportation, the bicycle has become a chic lifestyle accessory both on the road and at home—particulary in small dwellings where, because of the lack of space, it's forced to blend in with the decor. As a result, tons of clever solutions for stylishly storing bikes have been sprouting about in the marketplace. One of my most recent finds is the Kappô, a rack/storage combo that perfectly combines form and function. It was created by a Berlin-based team of avid cyclists, designers, and collectors that have taken it upon themselves to develop bicycle furniture that meet the highest standards of functionality, individuality, and design. What's great about the Kappô it's that it makes a clear statement in the room, even when the bike is not hanging on the wall. Love it's simpliicity and clean design!

SMALL & SMART

Talk about making the most out of a small space. Interior designer Jimmy Schönning knocked down some walls and reconfigure the layout of his tiny 376 square-foot studio to better fit his needs. By converting what used to be the old kitchen into a small bedroom and moving the kitchen to the hallway, Jimmy was able to create a more convenient flow for his charming pad. He was also smart to preserve the old kitchen cabinets and use them as extra storage above his custom-designed headboard. And of course, the space also benefited by the use of white and mirrors, giving the apartment a bright and airy feeling. Another clever solution to making a small home seem larger, is to keep the color palette to a minimum—something he achieved beautifully by only using white, black and wood accents. Here's yet another proof that style also comes in small packages.

IN A PAINTERLY FASHION

Living in limited square footage forces you to think of ways of cheating the eye to make the space look larger. Paint is one of the easiest ways to accomplishing this. Designer Caroline Gomez uses colors to define different areas in this French apartment, adding a few extra visual feet to this charming home. Her secret is to never paint an entire room in the same color, but strategically chooses a wall, or parts of it, to paint and create a sense of separation. For her, color is the perfect ally to establish a mood in a room and tell a story. By the way, how sweet is her color palette? I'm not much into pastels, but I totally love the color scheme she chose for this nest. I'm also feeling her “slow design” style where natural materials and pure forms are key.

MODERNIST PETS

Decorating around a litter box is not an easy task. But Seattle-based artist Crystal Gregory has come up with this beautiful collection of stylish cabinets to help cat lovers camouflage the unwelcome eyesore. Owner of two Canadian Hairless cats and two Italian Greyhounds, Crystal understood the need to take pet furniture to another level by creating Modernist Cat. The Collection is modeled with Mid-Century design principles—with utility and durability in mind. The cabinets can be arranged in different configurations to disguise unsightly litter pans, reduce litter tracking or be used as a place for your modern cat or dog to play, perch or sleep without compromising your home's fab style. I don't know what's cuter, her cool cabinets or her adorable pets.
