TRADITIONAL MODERNITY

Originally an oil mill from the 1700's, this breathtaking house is home to architect Durval Dias Junior. It was its typical rural architecture that made him fall in love with the abandoned structure and inspired him to renovate it into this beautiful refuge he now calls home in Mallorca, Spain. At the time of decorating it, Dias decided to go modern to contrast the elegant architectural austerity. He combined new clean-lined pieces of furniture with vintage industrial touches, always with discretion and comfort in mind. The use of a soothing palette of natural colors (white, black and earth tones)‚ essential materials (wood, stone and iron) and ancestral resources such as concrete, unifies all the rooms. Without a doubt, this is another case when tradition and modernity go hand in hand in perfect harmony.

PICTURE PERFECT

This fine pad is a shining example that bringing your work home can be a good thing. For interior stylist Joanna Lavéncreating a sensitive mix of internet furniture bargains from Ebay with fun decorative arts is her thing. Being fond of the 1950s style and attracted by slick shapes, she creates beautiful environments both at work and at her central Stockholm home. Her secret for a picture-perfect room: keep them simple and clutter-free, and try to keep cables neatly organized and out of sight when possible. A gal after my own heart!

A STRIKING HABITAT

A casual and exclusive environment surrounded by black, white and gray welcomes guests everyday at the hip Hotel Habita in Monterrey, Mexico. Behind the minimalist, concrete front desk visitors can admire a wall mosaic made of hand-made mirrored tiles brought from India. Every single space in the hotel is sleek, dramatic and filled with timeless classics like Swan Chairs by Arne Jacobsen and furniture from avant-garde designer Rick Owens. The hyper-modern interiors were created by Parisian design extraordinaire Joseph Dirand, the creative mind behind the stupendous Hotel Distrito Capital in Mexico City—which I featured here not long ago. This one is most definitely going on my list of favorite boutique hotels.

SUNNY IN MANHATTAN

Who hasn't dreamed of living in a fabulous penthouse in New York City? Well, I have. Everyday. But for New Jersey interior designer Barbara Littman, that dream came true when she renovated this gorgeous space into an urban pied-à-terre. Wanting to be part of the hustle and bustle of this great city, Ms. Littman sought the guidance of architect and friend Robert D. Henry to help her create this sunny 2,400-square-feet modern haven. Although the color palette is rather limited, her choice of yellow as accent was a superb idea. It really warms up the space and makes a strong statement. I'm in love with this place. Aren't you?

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

What's not to love about this gorgeous flat in Barcelona's Gothic District? Pretty much every single inch in this place is to die for. Architectural firm YLAB Arquitectos did a breathtaking job renovating this 1400-square-feet apartment, creating a quiet and intimate environment for its owner to work in, but at the same time conceiving a welcoming space for entertaining. Every room is uniquely designed, but the kitchen is my favorite. The use of wood on the walls and ceiling gives it a striking look and makes warm and inviting despite its ultra modern design.

HOMEMADE LUXURY

With her love for everything white, black and natural materials, interior designer Tanja Jänicke has created this super-functional and modern home in the heart of Helsinki. This spacious 1400 square-feet apartment is filled with unique design solutions and wonderful details, most designed by Jänicke herself. Of course, it helps to have talent and a trained carpenter as a better half—the perfect team to make a design vision a beautiful reality. The bright and airy rooms have a very fluid design story that makes their love nest rather personal and special.
