PARISIAN CHIC

I spent all day yesterday indoors preparing for the eminent arrival of Hurricane Sandy. So between keeping up with the storm's track, catching up with a long list of recorded TV shows and constant snacking, I got around to getting my daily dose of design inspiration. That's when I spotted this stunning Parisian pad in the pages of The New York Times Magazine. After a year-long renovation, interior designer Pierre Yovanovitch turned this 70s inspired apartment into a chic and modern jewel with impressive 14-foot ceilings and breathtaking views of the river Seine. It is quite the place to enjoy the wonders of this dreamy French capital.

LESS IS MORE

Most people often perceive minimalist spaces as stark and cold. But in reality there are many interpretation of this great style. Minimalist spaces can also be welcoming and warm, it all depends on the colors, materials and textures used in the decor. Take for instance this stunning Parisian flat featured in the September issue of Maison Française magazine fully redesigned by French interior designer Frederic Sicard in a neo-minimalist style. He beautifully transformed it into a luxurious, functional yet warm and inviting pied-a-terre by working with wood, rich hues and an amazing mix of furniture styles. This home is perfectly styled with just the right amount of pieces and accessories—proving my all time favorite expression ‘less is more’. Happy weekend!

A CHAIR OUT OF THE BOX

I've seen several interpretations of cardboard furniture, but this latest find, by San Francisco-based designer Dan Goldstein, is one of my favorites. The Re-Ply Reclincer is made with just four layers of upcycled heavy-duty corrugated fiberboard that are cut, laminated, molded and folded into a strong, comfortable shell. The triangular steel base that supports it allows the chair to comfortably rock and recline. You can then use your creativity to dress it up to match your home decor. I'm impressed!

HANDS ON

Having worked as a set designer and window display stylist, I'm over the moon with this installation by London-based design firm Studio Xag, known for their incredible art direction, sets and display projects. As part of the London Design Festival, in collaboration with the University of the Arts, they created this whimsical exhibition called Hands On. “We imagined a party in a shoebox, transformed into a period drawing room, complete with giant matchbox table and huge articulated hands making the finishing touches to the scene. We made everything in craft materials, mainly cardboard & paper to differentiate our work from that of the designers & artists featured”, they explain. The final product is an incredibly smart space full of amazing details and wit. If you want to take a peek and find out what it took to accomplish this fun project go here.

LIKE MUSIC TO YOUR EARS

Have you ever wondered what the pad of a DJ  looks like? Well, you're in luck as today I'll take you inside the funky Madrid loft of Turkish DJ Jay Cumhur. With a style between high-tech and flea market chic, this eclectic space is where he lives and works. The loft is an amazing fusion of art, music, design and recycled pieces—like the two flight cases he used as coffee tables mixed in perfect balance with a collection of mid-century classics to die for. Every room in his fun-filled apartment is full of quirky details and wonderful artwork, all with very special meaning to its owner. Everywhere you look, the loft radiates his love for music and his passion for art. It is obvious tracks are not all he knows how to mix—mixing colors, patterns and styles is also something he does pretty well.

RESPONSIBLE PAINTS

Believe it or not these beautiful color chips are made of recycled paint. Yes, you heard right. British interiors brand Mini Moderns, in collaboration with award-winning Newlife Paints, has created a 12-color collection of environmentally responsible paints. If you're wondering how they managed to do it, here's the scoop. They recover paint that has been thrown away in landfills and convert it into a premium grade matt emulsion with lovely coverage and a chalky finish. How clever is that? Plus the soothing color palette they chose to create is rather lovely.

GO PURPLE

I believe everyone is entitled to respect and understanding by others. By all means, nobody should be harassed or intimidated for being themselves and showing their true colors. October is Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, and today, in observation of Spirit Day, millions of Americans are GOING PURPLE to take a stand against bullying and to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth who are often bullied to no ends. So with this in mind, and to show my support for this great cause, I decided to share with you beautiful spaces with purple decor—a way of showing my support for this great movement agains such sad epidemic. You can also join in by wearing something purple today.

HOOKED ON HOOKS

I have a thing for hooks and always get über excited when I come across new designs that go beyond the expected. I love the simplicity of this modular version conceived by German industrial designer Sarah Böttger in collaboration with Meike Langer. The H2 hooks are made of a synthetic material and can be connected to create a fabulous sculptural rack for the foyer or bathroom. Even when not being used, the grouping will become a fun decorative piece for your wall. Fun!
