The Experts Have Spoken

With just a couple of weeks into 2011, the experts have started to spill the beans about what's going to be making an impact in the way we decorate our homes this year. The range is quite broad, but they all seem to agree on the fundamentals. According to them, the main design trends will derive from our need to re-evaluate they way we live, our longing for comfort, our interest for innovation and the urge of personifying our homes. Now that the design authority has spoken and given us its prediction, I believe these two trends will be the ones going strong

The Brit invasion

A couple of weeks ago I went to see Rain on Broadway, a great tribute to The Beatles that took everyone back to the time when all you needed was love. It was so infectious that it put me in a British state-of-mind. So here's my little homage to the land of crumpets, afternoon tea and fabulous Queens and Kings. This royal trend of using the Union Jack motif in home decor has been around for some time — and as we can see it's still going strong. My guess is because it evokes nostalgia and memories from wonderful trips abroad. It's all so abso-bloody-lutely cheeky!

Owlmania!

I don't have to turn my head to notice the latest fascination with owl decor that has been popping up everywhere. This nocturnal creature has quietly become the design inspiration for a diverse collection of accessories for your home  — in a very interesting range of interpretations. This novelty has come and gone through time, but this recent reincarnation seems to be most playful. From lamps, throw pillows, sculptures to even wall art, bringing any of these adorable pieces into your nest will add, for sure, a dash of fun.

Warming Trends

Everyone dreams to have the picture-perfect home with a beautiful fireplace in every room, especially when wintery days are almost knocking at our door. But don't feel blue if you don't happen to have that fireplace that you've been longing for. Now you have the option to bring some warmth and ambiance into your abode with these very stylish portable fireplaces. There is plenty where to choose from — some more affordable than others. But the best part of it is that they're vent-free, smokeless and the majority of them are fueled by bioethanol — a wholly renewable source of energy made from sugar, potatoes, beets, corn or other agricultural products (very cool).

Alphabet nook

Designers have always been inspired by everything around them, especially by the most ancient of things. The alphabet is no exception. Your ABCs and 123s have been, for the longest time, graphic shapes used as point of reference to create a vast amount of things, even soup – my favorite as a kid. Letters and numbers are designed with such precision and proportion that no matter how we use them, they will be a bold statement. Whether printed on paper, painted on a wall, silk screened on fabric or even made into furniture, these graphic representations can add an element of surprise and nostalgia. And what better example that this flavorful wood flooring (top) made from recycled whiskey barrel casks by McKay Flooring in the UK. Cheers! This fad of typographic decor won't be erased any time soon

Bird watching

Don't worry, no need to run! These feathered creatures are not here to get you. To the contrary, they are the latest craze in home accessories. They're not your typical Limonge figurines, but this new generation of objects d'art will be a conversation piece in any home, for sure. I personally think this wallpaper from Trove is formidable, it will bring the unexpected to any room. But hello, don't transform your home into an aviary. A couple of these lovebirds will be enough to introduce some harmony into your life. Happy Fall!

A brush of excitement

After black and white, red is the most commonly encountered color in our lives. An interesting fact: not all languages have a word for green, blue, yellow or orange, but all have a word for red. Of all the colors, it's considered to be the most vibrant and stimulating of all. Lipstick Red, a gorgeous hue with a pinch of blue undertones, will certainly inject a bit of warmth and excitement to a room.

Didn't you get the memo?

Every year, Pantone Color System comes out with a gamma of colors that will set the trends for each season, both in fashion and home decor. For Fall and Winter they are offering a palette of ten beautiful and exciting colors with very vivid tones which have already been making a splash in most home decor shops.

Among them you can find Endive, a very crisp yellow-green with freshness and lightness. Golden yellow, an earthy shade of yellow that will give you a retro look when combined with Purple Orchid – the unexpected choice of the bunch. Lagoon is the turquoise for Fall which is an absolute complement to Living Coral, a combo that will give you a hint of tropical to refresh your space. If you want a burst of passion, then Lipstick Red is the perfect choice. Chocolate Truffle is a delicious rich brown with plum undertones that could be a perfect side dish to Purple Orchid. If you're a green lover then go for Woodbine, a calming grassy green. When it comes to neutrals Oyster Gray grounds the palette, where Rose Dust, a flattering beige, is the romantic option.
