THE BEST OF TWO WORLDS

A beautiful fusion between old and new, the d-hotel in Kortrijk, Belgium offers its guests a different lodging experience. A windmill from 1841, a farmhouse and a the newly built futuristic structure come together gracefully to form this state-of the-art hotel. Each of the 45 rooms has a unique design concept, and all of them exuding glamour and serenity. The d-hotel truly brings out the best of both worlds.

A LAID BACK CONCEPT

One of the things I loved most about my trip to Amsterdam a few years back was the amazing variety of design and concept stores around town. It was really hard not to stop and peek in to see what each had to offer. It was a shopping paradise for the design aficionados. Actually, a new gem was recently added to this marketplace. The brand Yaya recently opened their flagship store in the Dutch capital and from what I can see in these pictures it's to die for. Designed by Dutch stylist and interior designer AnoukB, the decor has an eclectic/industrial look to it that gives the shop a casual flair that's rather delightful. Hmm, I've always wanted a reason to go back to Amsterdam, and this might be it. Wouldn't you agree?

WHITE NIGHTS

A 17h century mansion in the historic center of Maastricht, the Netherlands, was transformed into this beautifully chic design hotel. The Zenden Hotel offers four different rooms and studios, all decorated in the most minimalist style where white dominates each space. The decor, although spare, includes pieces from Vitra with bathroom fixtures from Alessi. The clean and basic feel of the interiors play a strong contrast to the building's historic and ornate architecture of the city's architecture.

IN TOUCH WITH NATURE

Don't you feel sometimes like taking off to a remote spot in the middle of nowhere? A peaceful location where to relax and take a break from your daily routine? Well, Hotel Magazin1 in an island off the coast of Sweden might be the ideal place to do just that. A former grain storehouse from 1934, the building now houses this charming country retreat with five very unique rooms individually designed in that Scandinavian style I simply adore. The decor is rather minimalist but with beautiful details that make each space warm and inviting. This hotel is the right place to be in touch with nature and yourself.

TALKING IN CIRCLES

Seventeen oversized concrete pipes stacked over each other create the captivating façade of the Prahran Hotel bar in Melbourne. Designed by Australian architecture studio Techne, the new venue offers a unique entertainment experience, especially for those sipping a cocktail inside one of the circular conduit-like booths. It looks like a fun place to meet up with friends for happy hour. Right?

A NEW AND FUN ROOMMATE

For me, traveling is about expanding my horizons and experiencing other cultures and customs. It's about enjoying the city I'm visiting as much as the place I'm going to be staying in. That's why I'm a big fan of the Room Mate Hotels — a quite affordable hotel chain that's passionate about great and innovative design. Located just steps from Barcelona's Plaça de Catalunya, the Room Mate Pau is the latest addition to their family. The friendly hotel offers a unique cosmopolitan decor full of character and great sense of humor conceived by architect and interior designer Teresa Sapey. By using oversized graphic images throughout the hotel's public areas, she created unexpected and fun spaces for the guests. The dramatic design also extends to the rooms, where white and circles are protagonists. Super fun!

WHEN IN ROME

The first thing that comes to mind when I look at this gorgeous room is that it's the private residence of someone with exquisite taste. Much to my surprise, this loft-like space is a fabulous Osteria and Pizzeria not far from Rome's city center. Noses Architects designed Kook with an eclectic flair that celebrates the old-world Italian aesthetic but with enough contemporary touches to create a special place where you can enjoy delicious Roman fare.

HONORING THE PAST

Do you have plans of going to Paris any time soon? If you happen to be so lucky, you absolutely have to stop by the recently renovated Café Artcurial by architect and art lover Charles Zana. The revamped look is a hybrid between bold sophistication and that old Parisian flair we've all fallen for. Zana's use of materials is exquisite, creating a modern space that honors the past. If you're totally loving Zana's new vision for this iconic restaurant, you can easily achieve the same vibe for your home with some of the pieces I'm suggesting below.
