MAKING A STATEMENT

Known for his persuasive, up-beat style of communication, English graphic artist, print-maker and designer Anthony Burrill has made words and language an important part of his work. He has developed a distinctive voice that is sought after not only by fans of his posters and prints but also by clients including Wallpaper* magazine. His simple, yet powerful prints are a fun way of communicating an idea or mood in your home. The now-famous “Work Hard and Be Nice to People” message has become a mantra for the design community and beyond.

A HOLIDAY SHOPPING STORY

With only four days left until Christmas, most likely people will spend this weekend running around in a craze trying to get their last minute shopping done. So in that spirit I thought I'd post this fun and witty series of vignettes shot by the always talented and creative Carl Kleiner. Created for Stockholm's Arlanda International Airport shopping area, the Christmas campaign is incredibly clever. I'm telling you, this guy never stops to amaze me. Happy weekend!

MOUNTING TREASURES

If you like the look of taxidermy but the animal-friendly form of this art, you will fall in love with this eccentric Bicycle Taxidermy by Regan Appleton. Many sleepless nights at the Royal College of Art and a homesickness for the rugged Scottish highlands, inspired Regan to take his father’s once prized but long discarded mountain and road bikes and mount the handle bars on a European oak plaque to turn them in rather unique taxidermy. How cool are these? For sure they'd make a wonderful piece or art for your wall.

FOR THE LOVE OF BIKES

Apart from being a fun source of transportation, the bicycle has become a chic lifestyle accessory both on the road and at home—particulary in small dwellings where, because of the lack of space, it's forced to blend in with the decor. As a result, tons of clever solutions for stylishly storing bikes have been sprouting about in the marketplace. One of my most recent finds is the Kappô, a rack/storage combo that perfectly combines form and function. It was created by a Berlin-based team of avid cyclists, designers, and collectors that have taken it upon themselves to develop bicycle furniture that meet the highest standards of functionality, individuality, and design. What's great about the Kappô it's that it makes a clear statement in the room, even when the bike is not hanging on the wall. Love it's simpliicity and clean design!

HANDS ON

Having worked as a set designer and window display stylist, I'm over the moon with this installation by London-based design firm Studio Xag, known for their incredible art direction, sets and display projects. As part of the London Design Festival, in collaboration with the University of the Arts, they created this whimsical exhibition called Hands On. “We imagined a party in a shoebox, transformed into a period drawing room, complete with giant matchbox table and huge articulated hands making the finishing touches to the scene. We made everything in craft materials, mainly cardboard & paper to differentiate our work from that of the designers & artists featured”, they explain. The final product is an incredibly smart space full of amazing details and wit. If you want to take a peek and find out what it took to accomplish this fun project go here.

A LOVE FOR LIGHTING

One thing I learned from my trip to Copenhagen and Stockholm this Summer was the importance of lighting in Scandinavian design, especially in interiors. Due to the long and dark Winter days, Scandinavians take pride in their lighting fixtures. Swede blogger Annaleenas displays her love for lamps by making this fab floor lamp. If you want to take a shot at making your own, all you need is a hanging lamp and a metal pipe to hold it. How cool is it?

FLAVOR OF THE MONTH

How about this delicious ice cream treat to celebrate the start of the weekend? Although it looks absolutely scrumptious, this sweet delicacy is not for consumption but a cool paperweight made out of white marble and chromed brass. Flavor of the month is designed by Greece is For Lovers, a creative company that introduces a new sense of “Greekness” to contemporary product design by mixing up a concoction of its country’s spiciest ingredients: humor, irony, nonchalance and extravagance. Have a sweet weekend!
