DEFINING YOUR BUDGET

• Written by guest blogger Margaret Jules

Your level of indulgence in luxuries is decided by your budget, and giving a new look to your home could be one of those luxuries. Whether an internal or an external makeover, the project might range from painting the walls of your house, to new flooring, and even buying new furniture for your dining room or living room. So if hiring an interior designer is your splurge of choice, then you must take a closer look at your budget so you can get what you need from your designer. However, there are various factors which could help you define your budget. Here are a few tips that will help you get there.

THE ESSENTIALS
  • Never confuse your budget with savings. Your budget should include the amount you want to spend to achieve what you desire for your home. This could also mean altering your desires and expectations depending upon the amount of money you have to spend on this project.
  • Have a clear idea of what are your priorities areas. The first thing you must do is create a list of things you want and things you must have. Don’t let budget be a foreign word in front of your designer. Lay down your priority list before he/she starts working on the project. You could also ask your designer if he/she has a special rate for doing the complete house and see if your budget is enough. Set your quality expectations up front so that your designer can guide you towards accomplishing your dreams.
BUDGET ALLOCATION
  • Choose the projects according to your means. For instance you may choose to only redo your dining room and bedroom or living room and kitchen, or work out other combinations depending on your needs. Then your designer can help you allocate your budget appropriately.
  • Look for brands that suit your budget. Here your wish list and must-haves will come in handy. If what you want is not within your reach, your designer can help you look for more affordable options.
  • Allocate a budget to each aspect of your home improvement. This could include things like flooring options, wall coverings, curtains, furniture, accessories, etc. It is also important to allocate part of the budget to third party services such as painters, carpenters, and most importantly your designer.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST
  • As much as you stick to your budget, remember that most home improvement projects tend to go a little over budget. So it's important to set aside an emergency fund for these situations.
  • Never get into debt while redesigning your home by planning judiciously and being realistic about your expectations.
  • Make the most out of this experience. Remember an interior designer is there to help you revamp you home to your needs and desires so communication is key in order to achieve what you're looking for.
