Mixing It All Up

• By guest blogger Ellen Spencer
A lush room with intense decor commands attention easily. Many people prefer riveting and dazzling patterns over plain colors and a minimal decor. They have a love for interiors that look strong and sensational. Although one can pick out subtle patterns that are not too overpowering, these will also look a lot more prominent than plain colors or nominal patterns. Here is a guide to do up your home using bold and striking patterns:
1. Patterns can be used on furniture, walls, floors, windows or items of furnishing inside your house. If the walls and flooring are toned down, then choose furnishing with conspicuous patterns. Whereas, if the furnishing is kind of plain then opt for pronounced patterns on the walls and floors.
2. Mix different types of patterns together and not the ones that appear to be similar. This ensures that they stand out against each other otherwise the two will end up looking the same.

3. You can combine two patterns together or even four or five of them. But never use more than five patterns in the same room; it will look way too overbearing. After deciding upon all the patterns to be used inside the house, pick out one which appears to be the strongest. Ensure that this pattern is a lot more conspicuous than all others you have picked as it will become the focal point of the room.
4. The scale and size of any two different patterns should never be the same, it is better to pick out patterns of varied sizes.

5. Designs that run vertically will make the space appear elongated while horizontal patterns will make the area look wider. Scale the dimensions and shape of the room before you choose patterns to go in it.
6. Pick patterns with bold and contrasting colors. In fact, picking patterns in an assortment of hues is a good way to introduce fresh and bright pigments in your house. Green and blue, pink and red, white and gray, green and white are a few popular color combinations.

7. Opt for patterns embossed on different types of fabrics such as cotton, silk, chenille and polyester. A varied texture catches attention easily.
8. Another important point to consider while doing up interiors is how you are going to use these patterns. Where you place the designs and the quantity of patterned fabric used helps greatly to create an impact. If the pattern is bold, do not use too much or too little of it.

9. The variety of patterns is endless, so team then up thoughtfully in your room. Oriental patterns go well with either extremely large prints or very minute designs. Florals mingle well with stripes and plaids. Mix bold argyle designs with smaller and delicate patterns. Putting together traditional prints with modern designs looks quite interesting.
