A Pad with Multiple Personalities

Have you ever wondered how your place would look like decorated in different styles? Well, that's the idea behind this project by interior designers Berta Cayuso and Astrid van Roy. They decorated one apartment in three distinct styles —contemporary, romantic and minimalist— consistent with today's trends and lifestyles.

In this version, the designers were inspired by classic design trends taken from the runway. An important part of their design was convertible furniture, modular designs and custom built pieces to ensure flexibility in the space. Their palate is based in a simple and timeless spectrum of neutral colors like black, gray taupe, beige, aubergine and white. This style represents the feelings of our time. It reinterprets the classics with a renewed and simpler vision of the past.

Warm and welcoming, this style tends to be more feminine. Berta and Astrid's inspiration came mostly from French Country using an elegant version of rustic and antique pieces: poster beds, garden consoles, chaise lounges, deep pile rugs and natural finishes. They freshly mixed raw tones, pastel or faded colors and wood painted in white. This style calls for lots of textures, softer lines and plenty of comfort.

In this case, less is more. The rooms are airy and brighter, and clutter is not welcome. Although simplicity is key, the designers didn't sacrifice comfort nor technology. It was important for them to integrate functionality with the beauty of design. In a minimal space shapes tend to be simpler and more geometric, and the use of basic natural materials is typical. That's why Cubism and the aesthetic of Bauhaus is a strong inspiration for this decor. Furniture such as the Barcelona chair and the Eames lounge chair are often seen in these rooms. White walls are the perfect canvas to frame a minimal space, but touches of black and grays also define the palate.
